Leagues, Jason Marquis is Always Looking to Make His Best PitchBy SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Communication Division October 2, 2009 In the 1991 Little League Baseball World Series, 12-year-old Jason Marquis led South
Shore American Little League from Staten Island, N.Y., to a third-place finish. Now, a 10-year Major League Baseball veteran
and a staple of the playoff-bound Colorado Rockies pitching staff, Jason has again affirmed that he and his teammates understand
what it means to come ready to play.Colorado rebounded from “also-ran”
status earlier this season to secure at a wild card berth in the 2009 National League playoffs. The Rockies entered the final
weekend of the regular season with a chance to overtake the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL’s West Division championship,
but ended up with a 92-70, three games behind the Los Angeles.With
a loss to the Dodgers in Colorado's regular-season finale, Jason posted a 15-13 for the year, with a 4.04 earned
run average in 216 innings (33 games). For his career, the 6-foot-1 right-hander has appeared in 290 games (231 as a starting
pitcher) and pitched 1,485 inning. His career record is 94-83, with an ERA of 4.48.Mr. Marquis, spent his first four Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves, followed by three with St. Louis,
and two with the Chicago Cubs, before joining the Rockies this season. His best statistical year came in 2004 with the Cardinals,
when he posted a 15-7 record in 32 starts, with a 3.71 ERA in 201 innings, and was ninth in the National League in wins. Earlier
this season, Jason was selected to his first National League All-Star team.Prior to this season, Mr. Marquis had played in the postseason with Braves (2001), Cardinals (2004-2005) and Cubs
(2008).
Jason
Marquis, the first player on right in the back row, currently is pitching for the National League’s Colorado Rockies.
He played for South Shore American Little League in the 1991 Little League Baseball World Series.During the ’91 Little League Baseball World Series, Jason collected both his team’s pitching
wins, highlighted by a no-hitter. For the tournament, the Manhasset, N.Y., native struck out 21 batters, walked four and scattered
three hits. Batting in the second spot in the order, Jason tallied eight hits in 12 at-bats, with a double and seven runs
batted in.South Shore American Little League (SSALL), representing
the U.S. East Region, opened the World Series with an 8-0 win over U.S. Central Region champion American West Side Little
League from Hamilton, Ohio. The eventual United States champions from San Ramon Valley National Little League from Danville,
Calif., defeated SSALL, 12-3, before bouncing back to beat Canada in the consolation game.In the team’s first World Series victory, Jason threw a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.
At the plate, he was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Playing shortstop against the West, Jason went 2-for-3.
His no-hitter came against Canada, a 16-0 win, in which he struck out 10 and was 3-for-4 with a double and four runs batted
in.Jason, 31, made his Major League debut with the Braves on June
6, 2000.Jason Marquis

with the Colorado Rockies. Jason (below) played in the 1991 Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.,
for South Shore American Little League from Staten Island, N.Y. He threw a no-hitter and had a 2-0 pitching record during
his team’s World Series appearance. The team finished third in that year’s Series. |
